January 22, 1931: BIRTHDAY -- Sam Cooke Sam Cooke began as a gospel singer in his fathers Baptist church then joining the Soul Stirrers, a gospel group. The group had some success recording, but in 1956, after the dawn of rock n roll, Sam Cooke sought to test his fortunes as a solo artist in pop music. His influence would be enormous both as a huge influence on soul music including Aretha Franklin (also from a gospel background, James Brown, Otis Redding, Al Green, and Stevie Wonder but also rock singer-songwriters including Jackson Browne and Bruce Springsteen. His hits form a familiar well-liked songbook, You Send Me, Another Saturday Night, A Change Is Going to Come, Chain Gang, Twisting the Night Away, Wonderful World, and Meet Me at Marys Place. His career was cut short on December 11, 1964, murdered by a hotel manager in Los Angeles. Controversy surrounds his death as the murder was ruled justifiable. https://youtube/watch?v=-6ChR-oqrA0
