January 23, 2014 John 2:1–11 (ESV) On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.” This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him. Invite Jesus to Your Wedding Everyone should invite Jesus to their wedding. There are many good reasons to do this: He brings the best wine and lots of it; He will entertain with miracles; and he will teach great lessons on life. But the best reason is he will bless the home of the married couple for their entire lives. It is clear that most couples do not invite Jesus to their wedding or into their home after the wedding ceremony. They depend on love, or sheer will to stick it out. We know from divorce statistics how well that works, whether you are Christian or not. The real key for a successful marriage is from day one to have the Lord be the Lord of your wedding day, and then from every day on. When Heide and I were married, her father and mother probably didnt spend (in todays dollars) more than $1,000. However, we invited Jesus to be the guest of honor. Men of God like Heide’s father and Charles Wagner (former pastor of Temple Baptist Church in Tacoma Washington) prayed for us, read I Corinthians 13, and spoke words of wisdom from Gods Word. We gave our marriage vows from a Christian world view, and nearly everyone there was a believer. From that day on, we have depended on Christ to be the cornerstone of our relationship. He has brought new wine more than once just when we needed it, so that our marriage was strengthened and refreshed at just the right moment. In your life and marriage, the real key is to invite Jesus to the wedding. He brings the best wine every time. Question for Growth What are you depending on to bring freshness, vitality, and strength to your marriage? Prayer Jesus, thank you for bringing new wine to my marriage every day. Without you, Heide and I would be a statistic. With you, we have new blessings every day. Amen.
