January 24, 2014 The perfect storm! Combine the disastrous and untimely collapse of the roof of the clearwell at the water treatment plant with a winter blizzard and you have the recipe for the perfect storm. That’s what happened Wednesday, January 15, 2014, at 5:15 pm. The collapse of the roof into the water plant’s clearwell effectively shut down the city’s ability to produce and provide water to the community. During an emergency like this it takes a large amount of people working together under extreme conditions and long hours to restore water to the community. As Mayor, I am very proud of all the people involved in the efforts to repair the water plant and restore water to our community. To all those listed below, you have my gratitude and thanks for a job well done. 1. The dedicated city staff and especially the Public Works staff, for without their experience and knowledge this process would have been severely hampered. 2. Madison Fire Department for use of lights and equipment. 3. Local businesses for bringing in extra bottled water for the community. 4. Dave Odens and his staff at Banner and Associates, the water plant project engineers. 5. PKG’s foreman and crew for their tireless efforts in making the needed repairs to bring the plant back online in a timely manner. 6. The Madison residents for their cooperation and patience during this emergency. 7. Local businesses for providing food for the crews. 8. Dakota Plumbing for their assistance and equipment. 9. KJAM radio and the Madison Daily Leader for keeping citizens informed and updated. 10. The Sioux Falls television stations for their efforts in keeping everyone updated. 11. All the various water systems for their offer of assistance. 12. Local contractors and businesses for offers of assistance. 13. The South Dakota DENR for their guidance. 14. Sioux Falls Health Lab for working the extra hours needed to test our water. 15. Coca-Cola for providing bottled water on short notice. 16. Dakota Splash for offer of assistance 17.
