January 26th: Move While not a very good shot, since I took this by aiming the P&S Canon SD1300 through the eyepiece, the bright object in this photo is the planet Jupiter. The three next brightest dots are three of the Galilean moons, so named because Galileo was able to observe the four moons as they orbited the giant planet. At the time, the accepted dogma espoused by the church was that the Earth was the center of the universe, and that everything orbited around the Earth, which itself was stationary in the universe. Seeing these moons moving around Jupiter, Galileo realized that everything did NOT orbit around the Earth, and for this declaration, was tried as a heretic. Since he was favored by the Pope at that time, Galileo was offered daily opportunities to recant his heresy. Despite being able to show the church leaders what he saw in the telescope, they still insisted he recant, which he finally did. As the story goes, Galileo finally grew tired of the pointless debate and finally recanted, agreeing with the church dogma that the Earth did not move. As he was being led out of the hearing, though, it is reported that he muttered under his breath, But it DOES move!
