January 27, 2014...On January 25, 2014, Michael’s Stores announced a suspected breach of customer credit and debit card information. The report is preliminary and there is currently no accurate estimate of the number of customers involved in the breach. The stolen information does not seem to involve any purchases made from their website via the internet. Michael’s operates stores in Maine in Augusta, Biddeford and Scarborough. If a Maine resident is contacted about the breach or is concerned that their information might have been obtained as a result of the recent data breach, the following information may be helpful: - Contact your bank (if a debit card was used) or your credit card company. - If your credit or debit card was used to make unauthorized purchases or withdrawals, you will not be liable for fraudulently obtained goods or amounts. - Michael’s Stores has announced that it will provide one year of free credit monitoring services for customers whose information was affected as a result of the breach. - Those with questions about the breach may also contact Michael’s incident response hotline at 1-877-412-7145 beginning Monday (1/27/14) at 9:00 a.m. (Eastern Time.) The hotline will be staffed and able to respond to questions from Mainers Monday – Saturday. - Maine residents who have been notified that their information was compromised in the breach may contact the credit bureaus to have a fraud alert placed on their information.
