January 27 “Balance: The Law of Love Ephesians 4:26 Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger. Plato once imagined the spiritual journey as a chariot moving through the wilderness of life, with the soul as the charioteer trying to rein in two powerful horses: the horse of anger or passion, and the horse of reason or order. Plato understood that both passion and reason can be life-giving, but only when they are held in dynamic tension, only when each power neutralizes the potential destruction of the other. Jesus tells us that we must balance the passion of anger with the discipline and reason of love. And Jesus tells us that the law of love can best be fulfilled, not through rules, but through relationships. PRAY: Where armies scourge the countryside, and people flee in fear, where sirens scream through flaming nights, and death is ever near: O God of mercy, hear our prayer: bring peace to earth again! Where anger festers in the heart, and strikes with cruel hand; where violence stalks the troubled streets, and terror haunts the land Where homes are torn by bitter strife, and love dissolves in blame; where walls you meant for sheltring care hide deeds of hurt and shame O God, whose heart compassionate bears evry human pain, redeem this violent, wounding world till gentleness shall reign.
