January 3: Today is the perfect day to tell this a story from last month on my sister, Brenda Foley Carroll. Making conversation, he asked her,So you are a Pirate fan? Yes, Brenda said. Do you follow the team in football, then? I sure do! Do you have tickets to the bowl game? Brenda: Theyre in a bowl game? (ECU plays in the Birmingham Bowl tomorrow at noon against UF.) When she told me about this exchange with someone she thankfully didnt know very well, it reminded me about a junior high experience I had. Debbie Kaegebein was a seventh grade cheerleader and invited me to sit near the squad during a basketball game. Fred - my first big crush - was sitting nearby, and she knew I wanted to get his attention. Of course, it would have been too gauche to let him know I like-liked him, so I pretended not to notice him and just be there to watch the game. What inning is it? I asked Debbie. He noticed me then. Later, in high school, I was on a group water skiing date with another guy I wanted to impress when we stopped at a hot dog stand on the way home. For once my mind was not on food. Howd ya want your hot dog? asked the vendor. I briefly tore my eyes away from the object of my affection and answered, Oh. Medium rare. My mother once asked how far it was to an out of town restaurant; our neighbor said, Oh, about an hour and fifteen minutes. (In North Carolina, how far is answered in time, not miles.) And how far is it back home? she said. He looked at her with a straight face and replied, Oh, its only about 45 minutes back; its downhill. My Daddy was outnumbered with three females in the house when we were growing up. I think we kept him amused. Ernest Avery used to say I made a good straight man for his witticisms; he acted like I was Gracie Allen or somebody. Maybe he was right.
