January 3rd 2015 Dog Training Tip and Information Wet Food Vs Dry Food There are tons of different diets out there for our furry pets. Dry kibble, wet canned food (in all sorts of ways such as pate, chunky stew, shredded etc), home cooked diets and raw. This is not a discussion of what diet is better, and is not up for debate. This is about wet food vs dry food (kibble). Both wet and dry are complete diets. They contain all the nutrients that will keep your dog healthy with some differences. Wet food has more moisture and protein and is less processed than dry dog food. Wet contains less preservatives than dry food. Canned food can also can be stored longer if it is unopened, therefore has a longer shelf life. Both finicky eaters and senior dogs benefit from the softer diet. Dry dog food is more economical, especially for medium and large dogs. It satisfies a dogs need to chew and crunch. There are cons of wet food such as price, the food spoils quickly after opening, and once your dog gets a taste of wet food it is hard to transition them back to dry. The main con for dry food is it does not have as many nutrients as wet and it contains more preservatives. Then there is that old tale about wet food causing tooth decay. This could be true for dry food as well if you dont provide any dental care to your dog. If you feed your dog wet food, just provide a chew bone or better yet, brush their teeth a couple times a week and that will not be an issue. Dry dog food doesnt contain any chemicals to prevent tartar, but only the abrasive action of chewing is suppose to prevent tartar build up. What type of food do you feed your pet?
