January 5, 1923: SAM PHILLIPS, talent scout, producer and Memphis - TopicsExpress

January 5, 1923: SAM PHILLIPS, talent scout, producer and Memphis Recording Service and Sun Records owner, is born in Florence, AL. In early 1950, he opened the Memphis Recording Service to record local talent like Howlin Wolf and BB King, selling the masters to RPM Records in LA and Chess Records in Chicago (sometimes to both labels at the same time!). By 52, PHILLIPS decided to start his own record label and Sun Records was born. On July 5, 1954, he recorded a 19 year old truck driver named Elvis Presley and PHILLIPS importance to American Popular Culture was forever solidified. We lost him in 2003 at age 80.
