January 5, 1954: The #1 R&B record in America was Honey Hush (Atlantic) by JOE TURNER and His Band. It was recorded in New Orleans on May 12, 1953, featuring: Thomas Sheldon and Frank Mitchell (trumpets), Pluma Davis (trombone), Warren Hebrew (tenor saxophone), Red Taylor (baritone saxophone), Dimes Dupont (alto saxophone), Kathy Thomas (piano), Edgar Blanchard (guitar), John Fernandez (bass) and Alonzo Steward (drums). The backing vocal group is unknown. This was trombonist Pluma Davis band, The Rockers. Some sources say that Lee Allen was on alto sax and Red Tyler was playing barry sax. They also say that Fats Domino or James Tolliver were on piano. We really dont know exactly who played on that session. It was issued on Atlantic in late August and it entered the R&B chart on September 19t h and made #1 on December 5, 1953. It was #1 for 8 weeks, making it the first #1 record of 1954.
