January 5, 1961 - Mr. Ed debuted. The show would run for six years. How many used to watch this sitcom featuring Mr. Ed. the talking horse and his nice but somewhat inept and accident-prone owner, Wilbur Post? The sitcom was based on some childrens short stories and ran for 6 years. Mr. Ed talks, but only to Wilbur, and is sort of a rascal, creating many situations for Wilbur to deal with. But, who could blame Mr. Ed? Hes JUST a horse. :-) Other characters include Wilburs patient and tolerant wife, Carol, and their neighbors, Roger ( Larry Keating) and Kay ( Edna Skinner )Addison, and after Keatings death in 1963, then, the Posts new neighbors were Col. Gordon Kirkwood, USAF (Ret.), portrayed by Leon Ames, Wilburs former commanding officer, and his wife Winnie (Florence MacMichael). Mr. Ed would take great delight in making Wilbur appear as if he werent solidly bolted down through various shenanigans. Another character is Carols father, a straigh laced, stiff and emotionless man who is constantly trying to persuade Carol to divorce Wilbur... boo. Why Ed can talk is never explained. the only comment on it is by Ed when Wilbur is puzzling over it: Dont try. Its bigger than both of us! As they used to say in the old science fiction movies: There are some things man is not meant to know . Well, it was fun while it lasted. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mister_Ed
