January 9, 1998 ... At #3, Sir Elton John, with Candle In The Wind 1997. Princess Dianas tragic death in August 1997 profoundly affected Elton John. He and Diana had been friends, and Elton sunk into a deep depression following her death. He contacted his longtime songwriting partner Bernie Taupin to assist in crafting a new version of their 1973 tribute to Marilyn Monroe, Candle In The Wind. Beatles producer George Martin was contacted to produce the recording. Elton John only performed Candle In The Wind 1997 live once, and that was at Princess Dianas funeral at Westminster Abbey. (Clip shown below.) He has vowed never to sing the 1997 song again unless requested to do so by Dianas sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. Candle In The Wind 1997 became the fastest selling single in UK history and topped the British record charts for five weeks. In the US, the song debuted in the #1 spot and stayed there for fourteen weeks. It topped record charts all over the world. Over the years, it has sold more than 33 million copies, making it one of the best-selling (perhaps the best) recordings in history. Elton John won the Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for Candle In The Wind 1997.
