January 9, 2015 Dear Parents and Friends, Happy New Year! We have much to celebrate this January. Our school enrollment has increased yet again with new students joining us in several grade levels. Our preschool is the largest it has ever been with 56 children in two classes. This week we received a tremendous gift of 4 beautiful trees for our center courtyard. They will be providing welcome shade in the courtyard and for the upper grade wing classrooms. Many thanks to Kauai Nursery and Landscaping, Mr. Gil Scott, and Mr. Jim Fields for this perpetual gift! We are preparing for Catholic Schools Week January 25 through February 1. We begin the week with mass at St. Catherine Church on Sunday at 9:30. We are encouraging all our families to join us as we kick off Catholic Schools week. Then on Monday, we have “Throw Back Day” when students can wear clothing from another decade. Tuesday is “Service Day” when each class will perform a service project on campus, and eighth graders will visit the Police Department and Coast Guard to express gratitude for their community service. Wednesday is “Student Teaching Day” and begins with a Pet Blessing immediately following morning assembly. Parents or guardians are to supervise pets brought to be blessed in the yard between Coyle Hall and the PLC. (Please do not bring animals into Coyle Hall as it is a food establishment.) Eighth grade students will then take on the roles of teachers and office staff for the morning. Finally on Thursday we will travel to Kamalani Park for prayer and play with our St. Theresa School family. There will be no school on Friday, January 30, as teachers will gather for a retreat. Students will also be participating in a poster contest with the theme, “Catholic Schools, Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” There will be one winner from each class and 3 school wide winners. Rummage Sale is just around the corner and we are collecting clean, gently used items at Coyle Hall. While our community is always so generous in donations, our great need is volunteers. A sign-up sheet will be available so that you can choose a convenient time to be part of this fundraising effort. It is, in fact, PTG’s biggest fundraiser of the year, bringing in $8,000 - $10,000. These funds support our children, this year PTG has committed these funds toward cooling the school and replacing old desks and chairs. Considering that tuition does not cover the true cost of educating each child and the short fall is made up with fundraising and grants. We are asking each parent to contribute 3 hours to the Rummage Sale set up and weekend. Chef Gilly has generously offered to cook laulau to sell during the Rummage Sale. Help is needed on January 17 to wrap the bundles. Dates to Remember: January 12: Drop off Rummage Sale items at Coyle Hall January 13: PTG meeting, 6:30 pm January 15: Kamehameha Workshop “Ohana Family Values” (Open to all families) January 17: Laulau wrapping in Coyle Hall, 10 am., Bring cutting boards January 19: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, No School Blessings, Celina Haigh
