Janus is complete now with finishing touches and ready for sale. In ancient Roman religion and myth, Janus is the god of beginnings and transitions,[1] thence also of gates, doors, passages, endings and time. He is usually depicted as having two faces, since he looks to the future and to the past. The Romans named the month of January (Ianuarius) in his honor. Janus presided over the beginning and ending of conflict, and hence war and peace. The doors of his temple were open in time of war, and closed to mark the peace. As a god of transitions, he had functions pertaining to birth and to journeys and exchange, and in his association with Portunus, a similar harbor and gateway god, he was concerned with travelling, trading and shipping. King of the Sacred Rites (rex sacrorum) himself carried out his ceremonies. Janus had a ubiquitous presence in religious ceremonies throughout the year, and was ritually invoked at the beginning of each one, regardless of the main deity honored on any particular occasion. My narration of Janus has the symbolic references to beginnings and endings, pathways, doorways, future and past. He is adorned with Keys at the his crown from the ancient first key creations to the modern day car key. The keys can be moved in different angles making the piece interactive. The future face of Janus is shining with modernization and the sunrise signifying the start of the day and the beginning of time. His future face is decorated with modern gears, a train engine provides tension to the piece and makes it feel moving and alive... ever pressing forward as time does. Janus past is reminiscent of the moon signifying the end of day and constellation references offer the feeling of ancient maritime-esque guidance through life and hopefully learning from it. Janus past is surrounded by past articles; a sundial, a castaway figurehead mermaid from a ship. In reference to the temple of Janus some doors are open, some are closed... one open door has a skeleton under it narrating the times when the Romans were at war and the door to the temple was open. On the other side I depicted the ancient city with many doorways and pathways to select from. When prayers are burned out from this piece smoke will rise from out of the sky scrapers, the smoke stack of the train engine, some of the doorways and some of the craters in the Past Januss face. I hope you enjoy the pictures and reading the description.
