Japanese Paper ‘Washi’ (literally Japanese paper) is a traditional type of handmade paper that has been produced in Japan since ancient times. Washi paper was recently recognized as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage item. Because most washi is hand-made, each sheet is unique and has a distinctive and durable warmth. Washi is stiffer than other papers and is often used for special purposes, such as origami or religious vestments. The Paper Museum, in Tokyo, preserves and display a wide variety of materials related to paper making, both ancient and modern, Eastern and Western.
