Japanese Respect Samsung Chairman, Koreans Hyundai Founder Respect is hard to come by. Many people seem to be bent on trying to earn the respect of others for one reason or another. But it comes of itself in a sense, as Lao Tzu once said, “When you are content to be simply yourself and don’t compare or compete, everybody will respect you.” On Jan. 7, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun (The Nikkei), a leading Japanese economic daily, released the result of an interesting recent survey of 100 corporate executives from Korea, China, and Japan. “An overwhelming percentage” of Japanese respondents chose Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee as the most respected Korean businessman in Japan, according to the daily. Samsung’s “reward system and top-down management style” are popular with an increasing number of Japanese executives, the daily wrote. In contrast, Korean executives seem to respect Japanese business leaders for their success in developing their companies into global titans. They respect Konosuke Matsushita, the founder of Panasonic, the largest Japanese electronics company; Kazuo Inamori, the founder of Kyocera, a multinational electronics and ceramics manufacturer; and SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, a Korean- Japanese businessman, the Japanese daily reported. Meanwhile, most Korean executives chose Hyundai Group founder Chung Ju-yung as the most respected businessman in Korea, The Nikkei wrote.
