Japanese kids raise money for Philippine survivors Some schoolchildren in western Japan are raising funds for survivors of last weeks typhoon in the Philippines. Six 6th-graders at an elementary school in Fukuyama City called for donations as their fellow pupils arrived on Thursday morning. The children were motivated by their connection with Shotaro Akehira, who spent time at the school and now lives with relatives in the stricken Philippine city of Tacloban. The children plan to hand over the funds to Akehira when he visits Japan so he can donate it to recovery efforts in the Philippines. Fundraiser Takashi Saito said he is worried about his friend. He said he hopes the money will help him and other survivors. A civic group in Fukuyama will also carry out a fundraising campaign later in the day.
