Jared Kenan (Ziggy) tagged me in a 10 favorite books post earlier, and Ive decided to answer his request for my 10. But Im not tagging anyone. If you like this, and you like pondering whats made a difference to you and why, then feel free. Im also stealing Heaves idea of adding a quote. 1. Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien - Because I wouldnt have become a nerd without it. Its a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door, he used to say. You step into the Road, and if you dont keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to. 2. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig - Everytime I read this book, I find out something about myself. And I find a way to get better. “The real cycle youre working on is a cycle called yourself.” 3. Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger - Because Holden Caulfield is my spirit animal. The mark of an immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause. While the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one. 4. Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegut - The outlook on life and war from this book is just amazing. The Tralfamadorians dont see human beings as two-legged creatures, either. They see them as great millepedes, with babies legs at one end and old peoples legs at the other. 5. Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams - Because it offers so much perspective in a humorous manner. *speaking of 2 alien races who warred on each other, only to realize our solar system was the true source of their problems* For thousands of years, the mighty ships tore across the empty wastes of space and finally dived screaming on to the first planet they came across-which happened to be Earth-where due to a terrible miscalculation of scale, the entire battle fleet was accidentally swallowed by a small dog. 6. Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk - Because its existentialist beauty. Tyler didnt care if other people got hurt or not. The goal was to teach each man in the project that he had the power to control history. We, each of us, can take control of the world. 7. On the Road by Jack Kerouac - Fictional in source, it spoke of what was going on Post WWII in America with the counterculture with a new perspective. The best teacher is experience, and not someones distorted point of view. 8. Got Fight? by Forrest Griffin - Comical book of the life and thoughts of Forrest Griffin, one of the more interesting character to grace the UFC. When your opponent lands a hard punch to your face, do not shake your head in an attempt to clear the fuzziness away. This isnt baseball and there is no pitch count. I dont care how many bells are going off in your skull, shaking your head only tells your opponent Im hurt - please come hit me again. 9. V for Vendetta by Alan Moore - Graphic novel writing at its finest. Not just the whole government should be afraid of the people thing. But just never forgetting who you are. “The past cant hurt you anymore. Not unless you let it. They made you into a victim, Evey. They made you into a statistic. But, thats not the real you. Thats not who you are inside.” 10. Catch 22 by Joseph Heller - Because I feel like everyone we meet is actually a character from the book. Somehow. There was a much lower death rate inside the hospital than outside the hospital, and a much healthier death rate. Few people died unnecessarily. People knew a lot more about dying inside the hospital and made a much neater, more orderly job of it. They couldnt dominate Death inside the hospital, but they certainly made her behave. They had taught her manners. They couldnt keep death out, but while she was in she had to act like a lady.
