Jason questions whether a rope is an object… . . . “The rope terminates at the surface of the atomic knot, yet the rope has no boundary at the E shell. The rope is not a self-contained object.” . . . We have two different contexts. They should not be confused. . A rope, ANY rope, is a physical object. The WORD rope in the dictionary can ONLY be put under the category labeled OBJECTS. Ditto for the WORDS house, dog, tree, rock, table, angel, triangle. Anyone who says that the WORD ‘rock’ is not an object should be executed!!! No exceptions!!! . I go to the hardware store and ask for a rope. The clerk gives me a twined physical object that I take home with me. I can see it. I can touch it. I can draw it. A rope is an IT! I can strangle you with IT. I cant do that with dilated time. I cant shove yer head thru a black hole singularity. I cant hang you with a pound of energy. . Do this experiment (always in the presence of a trained relativist). Go to the hardware store and ask for a wave. Come back here and show us what he sold you. . Or ask for a field, preferably a magnetic field. (I wouldn’t want to burden you with dragging in a football field.). Describe for us what they sold you. Begin with color. . So now we come to the conference. We are going to simulate light in front of the crowd. We are going to do it real time. We are NOT going to model atoms. JUST light! . I pull out my rope and show: . a. Why light undulates. b. Why light embraces an imaginary axis and ‘travels’ rectilinearly. c. Why the electric ‘field’ ‘travels’ perpendicular to the magnetic ‘field’. d. Why light ‘travels’ so fast. . Your turn. You pull out your wave? …the one the hardware man gave you? . You pull out your field? … the one you brought in your bag? . Please justify the properties of light – ONLY light – with either your wave or your field… but show us the object first. . . . Context # 2: the nitty gritty. . The rope is NOT a standalone object. It has no beginning and it has no end. The standalone object is the THREAD. Ergo, Single Thread Hypothesis. Whether the Thread can be said to exist is a different conference. It requires new language. . Where does a link begin? Where does a link end? . Well, if you replied, “It begins here.”, just torque it a bit or change your visual perspective and you note that the link continues. . Does this mean that a link of rope from the hardware store is not an object? . Again: contextual. Never lose sight of context! I cut the rope and remove all links except one. With this single link I can simulate amplitude and even torsion. I can also simulate ‘wavelength’. Hopefully, whatever I have in my fingers I can transfer to you so that you can SEE and FEEL for yourself these properties of light. Did I transfer energy? . Is the REGION of your hand we call ‘the palm’ an object? . I cut off your hand at the wrist and then chop each of your fingers. I have the palm of your hand in my hand. I have slyly converted the CONCEPT palm (a region of your hand) into a physical object. Again: contextual! . Here’s the rule: Be rigorous with definitions. Be flexible with context. . Focus on what the guy is saying. Don’t let him cross from concept to object or vice versa during the conversation. Be alert to changes in context within the discussion. Dont let the fella escape thru a tangent. This is where we get lost in translation. . Example… . Bill: What is a point, bean brain? . bean brain: Uh duh, a point is like this > . . Bill: Okaaaayyyy… . bean brain: A point is 0D. . Bill: Erm… it seems to me that the dot you drew has width and height… . bean brain: The dot is a pictorial representation of a point. . Bill: Okay. So what’s a point? What are you representing? . bean brain: Uh duh, a point is a location. That’s why it’s 0D. It’s a 0D geometric figure. Ahyuck, ahyuck, ahyuck. . . . So now, for all you music lovers out there, try the hand experiment with a region of space. Chop a chunk on your next trip thru space and bring ‘it’ in. I wanna hold your space. . youtube/watch?v=ipADNlW7yBM . . .
