Jasper Merchants Association Meeting Minutes from October 8, 2013. 6:10 PM Meeting called to order. 15 Members present Linda Burns with Name Droppers - Community Business Bags. Presented an idea that merchants could purchase 150 bags for $75 and each merchant on the bag would get (1) dozen to hand out. The bags are 18 x 8 x 15 size of the bag. 13 business ads per bag on the back. Front will says, “We Love (heart emblem) Jasper with Pickens County in writing under the logo. Suggest that JMA to put our own local newsletter out and those members can talk about themselves in this letter and place an ad offer a discount for goods offered. These newsletters will be given out to the Courthouse Employees and to other areas of the community. This will be a printed newsletter to be given out. October 26, 2013 Cruise In combined with the Main Street Mania. Starts 4pm to 11pm. Members can have booths during the event for $20 and non-members for the event $30. More organized event for the main street mania. Bring in money with having vendors of all types doing different things like school organizations, local food growers, crafters and so on. Trying to get the JMA more involved into the new and other annual events that other organizations are coordinating to include JMA or the local business merchants to stay involved with those putting events into the city and include those of the JMA Royce presented the idea of (Official 7 days a week Tourism Office) PROPOSAL: City of Jasper/Pickens County does not have a tourism office. The Chamber says they are, but have limited office hours Monday through Friday. Tourism is 7 days per week. I propose that Burnt Mountain Trading Company, who is open 7 days a week and is located on one of the main thorough fares in Jasper, will dedicate space for an office of tourism. A place where visitors can come 7 days per week and browse through and find out information about businesses in our great community. WHO CAN PARTICIPATE: There will be no charge to any member of the JMA to have fliers in this office. The area will be arranged by category or type of business. BMTC will maintain area on a day to day basis, but merchant is ultimately responsible for making sure their fliers and information is up to date. ADDITIONAL DETAILS: If a merchant would like to do a small vignette, there would be a nominal monthly fee for this service. Most likely $10 to $20 depending on the size. If merchant vignette items are for sale, then BMTC will charge a flat rate of 10%. All sales are uploaded nightly onto the internet, so merchant can look online to see if items have sold so they will know to restock. Example: Store X specializes in candles. They can put a small display of candles in their vignette. If a customer wished to buy one, they can do so. Another Example: A performing arts group has an upcoming event. If the tickets are general seating, we can offer to sell tickets for them. In either case, the sales are uploaded nightly so the merchant can log in to see what has sold. Byron and I only propose that JMA purchase a nice 2-sided sign to be installed in the BMTC parking lot along Church Street stating tourism office/information and an arrow. John from Tourism will get in touch with the Georgia Tourism board to ask and help us out with suggestions and more information on getting this up and running. Christmas Parade – 6 weeks prior have permit for closing Hwy 53. 3 Judges needed and have to out of the area. 2 so far are found, need at least 1 more. Trophies 3rd place to 1st and 1 for best of show. Get the Trophy from Trophies and T’s on Main Street. Get the police department to start and maintain the closer of the Main Street. Vendors if wanting to sell need to know if they need power. Find a MC for the event and groups or solo’s to perform during the event on the stage that the city will put up during the event. Tree will be put up and lighted by the City at the courthouse. Strict time guidelines will be enforced for the start and ending of the parade. They have to be ready to go at scheduled time and if they are not there when, last call is issued to start down the route, they are turned away. Mike Costanza for signage for the parade. Last vehicle is for the Santa. Need to find an in-door location so that we can host the Pictures with Santa. Paul Poore will be the parade foreman for those running the float. There is no candy allowed to be thrown from the floats. Floats may have 2 people walking alongside a float to hand candy out to children without having them running into the street. Need to get the stage from the city for the event. City will put the stage up. Need to get all of the equipment from Maxine Moore’s. Need to decorate the stage. JMA has audio equipment. Create event list with specific needed jobs to be completed so the event will be organized better. Halloween ‘Trick or Treat’ on Main Street will be Thursday, October 31, 2013. Currently there are 22 Merchants committed to handing out candy. Those include merchants along N. and S. Main Street and Mark Whitfield Street. City gives JMA $2000 for advertising in the Pickens Progress for the Christmas Parade from the Hotel taxes theyve collected. Application for the Floats for the Christmas Parades need to be posted into the Paper and Radio the first week of November so that they have time to get applications in. Evelyn Williams has been nominated to replace Donna Dooly as Treasurer. Was seconded and voted in as new Treasurer. Farmer’s Market on December 21, 2013 starts 9:30 to 1:30 in downtown. Work on a route plan with Jasper Police Chief Lovell for having a hay-ride during the On-Main Street Cruise In’s. Meeting adjourned at 7:47pm Meeting minutes by secretary Paul Poore
