Jaw trappers on the prowl to trap tigers in Karnataka MYSURU: Incident of leopard being caught in a Jaw Trap (JT) and its rescuing by the forest department officials has made the forest department officials, especially officials of tiger sanctuaries in the state to sit up and take note of the situation. Last week a Leopard was trapped in a jaw trap near Hagaranahalli village in Hunsur taluk adjoining Nagarhole National Park a habitat known for healthy tiger population. What has left more worried the wild life division and tiger sanctuary officials is incident has happened at a place near to Nagarhole National park . This is the reason state wild life division has sounded a high alert in all the tiger sanctuaries in the state , in addition to alerting territorial forest divisions to initiate steps to keep vigil on the gangs involved in jaw trapping of wild animals, particularly tigers . Though wild life officials are not sure on the resurfacing of notorious Katni gang which is apt in trapping tigers and other big cats by using JTs , they dont want to take a chance . Last time a gang of tiger poachers from Katni were caught at Biligiri Rangana Temple tiger sanctuary following an alert sounded by National Tiger Conservation Authority which informed respective state tiger sanctuaries officials on Katni gang poachers sneaking into South India. In the aftermath of leopard being trapped by a JT technique , officials of tigers sanctuaries in the state , particularly Bandipur and Nagahole tiger sanctuaries are on their toes to trace gang which trapped the leopard and initiated various measures to check the gangs entry into parks. Officials are even checking the gangsters whereabouts and jail records to know whether jailed gangsters have come out . Bandipur tiger sanctuary director H C Kantaraju said his men who swung into action immediately after the incident evicted a north Indian black smiths who pitched their tents at Angala village on the borders of Bandipur tiger sanctuary and asked to move out of Karnataka . We are on a high alert and there is no chance of Katni gang entering state he said , suspecting local gang behind the Hunsur leopard incident. Even R Gokul director Nagarhole Tiger sanctuary said as incident had happened outside park area, territorial forest officials have been asked to investigate and find out the gang involved in it. We have sent men to look after suspects he said explaining intricacies involved in this issue vis a vis limitations of tiger project officials who neither have sufficient men power nor modern gadgets to tackle the roaming poachers . However , chief wild life warden and PCCF Vinay Luthra said despite various constraints and limitations high alert has been sounded and tiger project officials are already on job to trace poachers involved in leopard trapping and check possible entry of Katni gang into Karnataka. Even we have asked territorial forest officials to keep a vigil on the activities of all poachers he said timesofindia.indiatimes/city/mysore/Jaw-trappers-on-the-prowl-to-trap-tigers-in-Karnataka/articleshow/45362438.cms?
