Jay Boland and the next five sailors to finish set a new course record by completing the 10 mile race. Jay’s outstanding performance had him hitting the beach in 1 hour-eleven minutes and 43 seconds. Scott Winebarger placed second in 1:13:06. Jamie Chapman 3rd: 1:15, Dennis Bevington 4th : 1:17, Chris Borchardt 5th : 1:18, Tim Etherington 6th : 1:20. “Fast” Frank from North Carolina finished 7th in 1:24 and Glenn Woodell and Wendy Podmenik Darugar finish in 1:36. They capsized and got tangled in lines. Leonard Mayo and BR Flowers beached due to high waves and equipment failures. Carlos Tricoche, who sailed a Zuma, rounded the Lighthouse and then suffered a series of capsizes that damaged his mast. The Coast Guard towed his sailboat to Little Creek and the Marine Patrol dropped him off at Wallace’s Marina. The Hobie’s got beat up too. Christin and Jim Watts finished, but had equipment failure. Glenn Beck returned with equipment failure after getting nearly to the lighthouse. Dillon Foxx had equipment failure and capsized. The conditions were very challenging in both directions. It was a close reach on port tack all the way to Thimble Shoals Light. Coming back it was still a close reach on starboard, but the sunfish were not sheeted in quite as tight. There was lots of wave surfing especially on the return trip to Grandview. Congratulations to all who participated and all who helped in the rescue efforts.
