Jazz Calendar for Venice and South County. South County Jazz Club & Glenridge Performing Art Centers Concert on Saturday, 03/15, 8 pm: Jim Cullums Riverwalk Jazz Band, best known as the star of Riverwalk Jazz on public radio since 1987 and heard on over 150 stations and online, performs at The Glenridge on Palmer Ranch, 7333 Scotland Way in Sarasota. The Band plays jazz in the classic manner, in the style of small, hot ensembles prior to WWII. Its repertoire covers a lot of ground, from 19th-century cakewalks to the small pre-war Benny Goodman ensembles. Youll hear the sounds of Jelly Roll Morton, Original Dixieland Jazz Band, New Orleans Rhythm Kings, King Oliver Creole Jazz Band, Louis Armstrong, and Sidney Bechet, as well as a heavy emphasis on Bix Beiderbecke and Hoagy Carmichael. They frequently perform live in big venues like Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, Wolf Trap and major worldwide jazz festivals. This is a rare opportunity to hear this renowned band live in a smaller venue at The Glenridge. There will be no intermission. Monday, 03/10, 7 pm: Lisa Kelly/JB Scott Jazz Quintet, a group led by a pair of Jacksonville artists making their first appearance at Charlotte County Jazz Society (CCJS). Vocalist Lisa Kelly has been recognized in Downbeat Magazine awards as both a composer and vocalist. Trumpeter JB Scott is the former music director of the Dukes of Dixieland and Associate Professor at the nationally recognized jazz studies program at the University of North Florida. Scholarship Announcement: The Charlotte County Jazz Society will be awarding its Bud Wagner-Donatella and Ken Neuman Memorial Scholarships on Monday, April 14. The scholarships are open to high school seniors from each of the high schools in Charlotte County who plan to pursue a major or minor in music or who continue to actively participate in music performance during their college tenure. The deadline for applications is March 14 and auditions will be held on March 29 in the Band Room at the Charlotte County Cultural Center at 9 AM. Anyone wishing to apply may do so by obtaining an application from his/her high school Career Counselor or band director. The audition requirements are included in the application form. Scholarships range from $500 to $1,000. Two years ago, the Society awarded nine scholarships to participants. Application forms may also be copied from the Society website at ccjazz.org. Applications should be sent to Dr. Ennis J. Bisbano, Scholarship Chairman at 1589 Navigator Road, Punta Gorda, FL 33983 by the student or through the high school Career Counselor.
