Jazz became front and center in the 50s... making the front page of Time magazine. The person that did that had dreams of being a musician that were nearly crushed - literally. He was working as a young man on the plains of California, and his left hand was crushed... His older brothers were already in the music business, and didnt really want to follow them... but in college kept being called to music. He was set to graduate, and suddenly they realized he couldnt read music ;-) He was playing entirely by ear. He graduated, and was drafted in to the army. He volunteered on the road to play the piano, and people enjoyed his playing so much he got into the Army Band... and the rest was history. Dave Brubeck became an ambassador of Jazz to the entire world, and by doing that, picked up the different sounds, and more importantly, the rhythms of music everywhere. Like Louis, Dave used music to get into communist and other nations like no other. He was actually devastated that he made the cover of Time before Duke Ellington and wanted to turn it down. Here is the album most know him for, and it is worth listening to the whole thing. Each song is written to a different time signature - hence the name. His crushed hand gave him the distinctive rhythm in the bass section and the dynamic sound that is his...
