Jazz music is often utilized as an instrument of change.and a soundtrack of the times. As International Jazz Day honors drummer Max Roach on his birthday, we think of the pivotal record, We Insist aka as Freedom Now Suite which was a collaboration between Roach and Oscar Brown, Jr. and wrote songs that played variations on the theme of the struggle for African Americans to achieve equality in the United States and an awareness of the newly independent nations of Africa trying to achieve their own freedom.
