Oh my, some those cartoons are fairly offensive... it would almost appear that statements about free speech and secularism are cloaking a deeper vein of anti-immigrant sentiment with some pretty grotesque racism and... that cartoon appears to be comparing the girls abducted by Boko Haram to welfare moms in a super icky way so... maybe je not quite suis pas Charlie. Or to put it another way, Reaction #1: Those people were shot over a cartoon! A cartoon! Reaction #2: After some googling, I am much less comfortable with these cartoons than I thought Id be. Was expecting to find, how dare you suggest that your personal religious standards should apply to everybody and back up this belief with violence and intimidation? Found some of that, but also some of youre dirty and lazy and you have a big nose and I hate you. Reaction #3: Oh shit! There is nuance in this situation! I now feel compelled to reiterate that nobody should have been shot and shooting a person is always worse than publishing a drawing. Reaction #4: Oh crap, more terrorist attacks, which, in addition to being tragic, link the events in Paris even more strongly to a complex historical context weaving together religion and secularism, immigration, national identity, international relations, race, and terrorism. Reaction #5: Damn, I have just realized that I know NOTHING about French politics.
