Jean F. Callahan April 23, 1953 - July 23, 2014 Jean F. Callahan, loving and devoted wife, mother and grandma, passed away at Mercy Mount Shasta hospital surrounded by her family on July 23, 2014. Jean was well loved by her family and many friends. She was born in Grants Pass, Oregon on April 23, 1953 to Elton and Velma Jefferson. In 1957, they moved from Oregon to their Miner Street home in Yreka. She attended Gold Street and Jackson Street schools and graduated from Yreka High School in 1971. She then married her high school sweetheart, Don Callahan, on December 1, 1972. Over the next 33 years they continued to make their home in Yreka, raising a son, Chris Callahan and a daughter, Deanne Callahan Chapman. Jean worked at Scott Valley Bank in Yreka and later took a job as a shipping clerk with Sierra Pacific Industries. When the mill closed, she went to work for the Yreka Western Railroad before a long career in the Tax Collector/Treasurers Office at the Siskiyou County Courthouse. After she and Don retired, they sold their home and traveled in their RV for 7 years and also became volunteers with the Oregon State Parks. In order to live closer to their grandchildren, they bought a home and moved to Lake Shastina. They still enjoyed their volunteer work and continued to do so for several months out of the year. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Elton and Velma Jefferson, and her older sister, Patricia Jefferson McKown. She is survived by her husband, Don Callahan, of Lake Shastina, son, Chris Callahan, of Grenada, daughter, Deanne Callahan Chapman, of Lake Shastina, twin sister, Joan Gavaldon, of Prescott, Arizona, sister, Kay Fay, of Yreka, brother, Bucky Jefferson, of Yreka, mother-in-law, Pat Callahan, of Yreka, 2 grandsons, 4 granddaughters and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held in her honor at 10 am on Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at Evergreen Cemetery in Yreka, California. Memorial donations may be made to Madrone Hospice, 255 Collier Circle, Yreka, California.
