Jeb Bush on 21st Century Education Reform: Q. When one listens to conversations regarding the future of education in the U.S., the word “reform” is often suggested. However, “reform” can have different meanings. As the chair of the Foundation for Excellence in Education, can you share how your organization defines education reform for the 21st Century? A. Education reform has always meant only one thing as far as I know. And that is making kids the focus of public education. It’s really that simple. Charter schools, accountability, tenure reform and other strategies are nothing more than tools to accomplish that mission. We need to give students access to the learning environment that best meets their needs. And this means excellent teachers, a choice of quality schools, access to technology and well-defined academic standards. There is nothing as terrifying, and threatening, to fascists as an educated populace that is unlikely to fall victim to lies and misinformation meant to sway an ignorant population’s opinion that being set upon by tyrants is in their best interest. One tactic to control a population is prohibiting education for the masses by either restricting access to education altogether, or devising a means of controlling curriculum and instruction through private and religious institutions paid for with public funds that, in America, has long been a goal of conservative-movement fascists and actively pursued by corporate Republicans and their legislative arm the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC)....
