Jeff McCabe For State Representative ....If you would like you can consider this your phone call from me....A good deal of the effort and time that dairy farmers put into their livelihood is ensuring the quality and safety of the milk they produce for their neighbours tables. Whether that milk is sold at the grocery, a farmers market or on the farm every LICENSED farm in Maine is dedicated and vested to meeting, if not exceeding, the standards set forth to help ensure that dairy is one of the safest food items you can purchase. Thanks to Senator Sherman of Aroostook and Representatives Cray of Palmyra, Marean of Hollis and Timberlake of Turner for reporting and recommending that An Act To Allow the Sale of Unregulated Farm-produced Dairy Products at the Site of Production(H.P. 1278) (L.D. 1786) Ought Not to Pass whereas the remainder of the Joint Legislative Committee on Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry has reported and recommended that amended versions of the bill that in effect allow for unregulated & unlicensed farms be allowed to sell their milk. The premise and reasoning behind this proposed regulation is that it is an undue burden and excessive financial investment to require farms that sell their milk and dairy products to the public be required to become licensed and continue to meet certification, licensing and inspection requirements. We firmly believe and understand that not only are our customers and neighbours worth the burden and investment of meeting licensing and inspection but they are worth endeavouring to EXCEED those requirements. As this bill may be voted on as early as tomorrow, March 31st, please contact your State Representatives & Senators and the Governor’s Office ASAP and make your voice heard on this issue...encourage them to vote Ought Not To Pass (ONTP) on LD 1786 (Senate phone # = 1-800-423-6900 / House phone #1-800-423-2900 / Gov’s Office – 287-3531) More information on the bill and the amendments, as well as public testimony can be found here: mainelegislature.org/legis/bills/display_ps.asp?ld=1786&PID=1456&snum=126
