Jeffrey Moidels premiere of 4 Love Songs was a wonderful end to a Valentines Day weekend. Based on 4 Pablo Neruda love poems these beautiful scores were written for singer Mimi Lerner who died before she could sing them. The song cycle covered 4 stages of love. The first song, I crave your mouth, your voice, your hair, in a modern classical South American style tango, captured the heat of a new relationship, hunting for you, for your hot heart. And now youre mine. Rest with your dream in my dream., was a romantic dance, in a modern style, representing the intimacy of a growing relation. The over the top stormy music for Love crosses its islands, from grief to grief. transformed into the dramatic test of the storm, We wanted to build a strong nest, to a calmer acceptance, but love was not like that., something anyone in a mature relationship will understand. The final song, When I die, I want your hands on my eyes., was appropriately reverent but also lively, I want what I love to continue to live., looks at the depth of our lifetime commitment to our partner. The songs were wonderfully sung by Charles Stephens. The Octava Chamber Orchestra have some of the areas best musicians, playing in one of the best acoustical spaces. Besides some to the favorite classical pieces, they also feature some of the finest new music compositions, from Jeffrey Moidels compositions tonight to teenage composition contest winners. Tonights program will be repeated in Bellevue next Sunday.
