Jennifer Hanisch Communication in a Global Environment BUS 608 8/24/2014 Reflection Paper 1 From a four minute interview this morning on CBS Sunday Morning, I further researched online the activities of RA Paulette. RA Paulette has been excavating caves for about 25 years. He uses hand tools such as shovels, pic axs and wheel barrel. He has said that he “learns things for himself without drawings and feels the space with his hands”. He also says that what he does is a celebration and his desire is to create a space that is trans-formative. Reflection~ My assumptions come from the word choices of RA Paulette as he describes his cave projects. My perspective has become habit and tends to prioritize psychological interpretation before societal implications. 1) When RA uses the words “learns things for himself”, it appears to me that he has found it necessary to avoid situations where people teach or try to influence others with their ideas. This also implies for me that he encountered some negative learning experiences and found that pursuing activities alone was more successful. 2) When RA uses the words “feeling the space”, it tells me that RA is predominantly a kin-esthetic learner and probably has a high aptitude for spacial relationships. Often creative and divergent thinkers have conformity issues that cause negative social experiences. 3) RAs use of the word “celebration” as he defines a purpose for what he does tells me that he is being actively positive, and creating a “trans-formative” space shows that he has a good understanding of the passage of time and how it relates to his work.
