~Jennifer here~ Im sad to tell you that Romeo has had a major setback. He was seen by our vet 4 days ago and while treating him we noticed part of his back hoof had lifted in the corner. It looked more like a chip but the vet pointed out to me some major stress lines in the hoof and thought they were a few months old. We put this down to perhaps the trauma of leaving home and the stress of being put in the sales, bought by doggers and being trucked etc months ago. Well, within 4 days, the hoof has separated along the stress lines and his hooves are literally falling off. (Called sloughing off) The specialist farrier has been shown the photos and we are all pretty upset and at this stage we do not know his prognosis. His feet are wrapped up, the vet has measured his hooves, and I have to buy him 4 boots to keep his feet held together. The most important thing I want to tell you is Romeo is showing no signs of pain, he is walking perfectly, not tender in his feet, and is not laying down. This could change at any time as the condition worsens, or his hooves continue to slough off. Please know that if at any time his condition becomes painful, then we would end his suffering on vets advice. But right now we need to see what will happen over the next few days. This is not common and we are all shocked at the moment that it has happened. Romeo is one tough little guy and he will fight this. Im very upset tonight at how unfair it is. He has waited to be rescued and now that things are finally looking good for him, he is struck down with this. I do not want to see this little guy suffer and am dreading what the next few days will bring. He has vets an farriers monitoring him, and all of you out there wishing him well.
