Jeremiah 29 contains a letter from the prophet to those who had - TopicsExpress

Jeremiah 29 contains a letter from the prophet to those who had been carried to Babylon as captives (29:1-2) and was about 10years before the complete fall of Jerusalem in 586 BC. Jeremiah instructed them to be good citizens of the land where they were living. They were to build houses, marry, and raise families in the cities where they were living (29:5-7). Instead of being filled with anger, they were to pray for the peace of the city where they lived (29:7). They were to reject the messages of the false prophets who told them the captivity would not last very long. This is a great example for Christians when we find ourselves in situations we do not desire. Instead of giving up on life, we should make the best of our situation. Instead of being filled with resentment, we should seek peace for that place and the people who are there. Instead of relying on messages of false hope, we trust the grace of God for the help we need to be content wherever life may take us (Phil 4:11-13). When leaving my first pastorate a member there gave me a plaque that said, “Bloom where you are planted.” That is what Jeremiah was telling the people of Israel to do. God has good plans for his people and will fulfill them in his time (29:10-14). We must trust his faithfulness and power to accomplish his will in our lives. Chapter 30-31 continue the theme of restoration.
