Jeremiah 47 Courage & Compassion This prophetic declaration - TopicsExpress

Jeremiah 47 Courage & Compassion This prophetic declaration was issued prior to the fall of Jerusalem, yet during whose reign, is uncertain. This pronouncement against the Philistines and subsequent fulfillment came against the most antagonistic people toward the Jews. They were a constant thorn in the side of Israel, as well as being one of the idolatrous. The waters refer to a large number of warriors coming out of the north, Babylon, over taking the land, destroying cities and lives. Chariots, along with cavalry were employed in this expedition. The sound was so fearful that men ran, with no concern for anything but their own lives, not even their children. A sad indictment on these men is found at the close of verse 3, lacking courage. For the challenges to be faced and encountered in the days ahead for the Church, it will be crucial that an essential character quality will be that of COURAGE. Courage is a commodity cultivated by courageous choices, followed by decisive actions. Rise up o men of God and be courageous. As a consequence of the deeds committed by the Philistines against Israel, judgment and shame would be evident. Then the prophet has a conversation, metaphorically, with the Sword of the Lord that is insightful. He asks how long this devastation will last. Theres an indication of heart felt mercy by the man of God for his mortal enemy. Do we rejoice or weep when our enemy is under attack. Jeremiahs heart goes out and appeals to cease the judgment; yet the Swords response is that all what the Lord has commissioned must be fulfilled. Another essential character quality required for the days ahead for the Church to be effective is that of COMPASSION. Compassion isnt an emotion, like courage, it is manifested as a consequence of choices and action. Compassion will move us to act, sentiment will merely soothe our conscience.
