Jerry Bruckheimer-produced drama attracts smaller audience than Morecambe and Wise sketch compilation on BBC2 Homeland was always going to be a tough act to follow and Channel 4s new US drama Hostages, which is also based on a hit Israeli show, could only attract 1.3 million viewers for its launch on Saturday. Hostages, starring Toni Collette and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, began its 15-part run with a 5.7% share of the audience between 9pm and 10pm. While Hostages has much in common with Homeland, Channel 4 said it had a different tone entirely. Homeland, which just finished its third series on Channel 4, began with 2.8 million viewers for its feature-length opener two years ago. Hostages found itself up against the second half of BBC2s nostalgia fest, Morecambe and Wise in Pieces on BBC2, watched by 2 million viewers, an 8.4% share, between 8.30pm and 9.30pm, and the end of Channel 5s US drama NCIS, watched by 600,000 viewers (2.6%) between 8.40pm and 9.40pm. Teatime dynamite Earlier, BBC1 had a teatime hit with a three-year-old episode of Dynamo: Magician Impossible. The show, which first aired on UKTVs Watch three years ago, pulled in 3.8 million viewers, a 20.9% share between 5.30pm and 6.15pm. The early Saturday teatime slot has proved problematic for BBC1, with shows such as That Puppet Gameshow and I Love My Country both pitched into the early evening battleground and axed after one series. Dynamo: Magician Impossible had the better of ITV film repeat, Ice Age 2: the Meltdown, watched by 2.2 million viewers between 5.20pm and 7pm. All ratings are Barb overnight figures, including live, +1 (except for BBC channels) and same day timeshifted (recorded) viewing, but excluding on demand, or other – unless otherwise stated.
