Jerry Eze added 5 new photos. 11 mins · Jerry Eze GENERAL TIPS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF LEADERSHIP /SAVING FACE IGNORING GRACE. Read:- 1 Samuel 15:24-31 It is my desire to share with you some tips on how leaders are made. Everyone of us is a leader in his own capacity. There will be leaders as long as there are people with things to do. Everyone that is called into God’s vineyard has potentials for leadership and if these traits are surrendered to Christ, they can be used in new dimension. Christ is still in the business of MAKING and CREATING. Just as he said to His first disciples, “Follow me, and I will make you to become fishers of men,” He can make out of us great leaders of His own people. The following guidelines, adapted on good ADMINISTARATION can be drawn up for the Christian Leader to follow: A. Definition of Leadership: Your definition of leadership may be determined by your personality and your general philosophy, by your capacities and your perception of the role you are to fill as leader. Whatever your definition, a leader is a guiding head of a group; one who directs the activity of a group. And for the true Christian leader, leadership is the capacity to find and know the will of God for the group and then persuade the group to acknowledge God’s will and follow it. Let us take the word “Leader” and see what each letter stands for: a. L – Love the people b. E – Expect continuing growth and improvement c. A – assist workers to develop the right attitudes towards work d. D – Determine need, details plans, and perform wise supervision e. E – Exemplify the willing worker. Don’t ask others to do anything you are not willing to do yourself f. R – Recognize achievement by workers. A deserved “Thank you” well delivered is tremendous motivation to improvement in itself. B. A DESCRIPTION OF A LEADER: A leader is a member of the group who: 1. Has more status than other members. 2. Is trusted in decision – making by others members. 3. Coordinates the activities of the others towards shared goals. 4. Shares the ideals and values of the group 5. Is determined by the perceived needs of the group. The group wants its leader to be the most able member in solving the goal – seeking problems of the group. C. WHAT A SUCCESSFUL LEADER DOES: A successful leader is a person who: 1. Is an initiator. This means he displays initiative, presents well – organized plans, works hard, gathers and provides information necessary to execute plans, etc. 2. Is an improver. He is a person who is secure in himself and has no fear to be surrounded by competent people. He uses outside consultants and specialists to help in solving problems, provides opportunities for workers to improve their abilities, and provides necessary advice for his workers. 3. Is a recognizer. He recognizes and encourages initiative. He welcomes wise suggestions from his subjects and sees potentialities in people. 4. Is a helper. He is one who is always ready to help others solve their problems. He help set up some criteria for testing ideas about solutions, making it easier to identify fruitful ideas. 5. Is a coordinator. There are several factors involved in the capacity to coordinate: a. He knows himself. He knows his own areas of strengths and weaknesses. b. He knows others. He knows his members and their capacities and where they will fit best into the organization. c. He does not hesitate to get others to do what he is not able to do himself. d. He encourages all who will be affected to participate in planning and policy – making. 6. Is a nice guy. He is dependable, consistent in his disposition, to anger courteous and friendly. According to Aristotle, a Greek philosopher, one of the distinguishing marks of Man was “risibility,” the ability to laugh. As far as we know, no other creature shares this characteristic. A leader needs to know how and when to laugh. He needs to be able to laugh at himself, and with others. One must be able to see humour in situations, or one will become overwhelmed by his circumstances, but this laughter must not become derision or mockery; it must be controlled by intelligence and guided by the Holy Spirit. D. GENERAL BIBLICAL VIEW OF A SUCCESSFUL LEADER To conclude this section, let us briefly outline certain characteristics of a Christian Leader as found in both the Old and New Testaments: 1. INTELLECTUAL: Wise, Understanding, Of sound mind (Deut. 1:13; Acts 6:3; Tim. 3:2) 2. SPIRIT: God – fearing, Obedient to law, Spirit – filled, Sound doctrinally (Exod. 18:21; Joshua 1:7 – 8; Acts 6; Titus 1:9). 3. DISPOTION: Self – controlled, Hospitable, Not quarrelsome, patient, Not contentious, grave, Slow to anger, Not vindictive (1 Tim. 3:2 – 8; Titus 1:7). 4. CONSCRATION: Not covetous, Refuse bribes, Not drinkers, No money – grubber, Holy, temperate (Exod. 18:21; 23:8; 1 Tim. 3:3; Titus 1:8). 5. REPUTATION: Known, Blameless, Of good report outside, Of honest report (Deut. 1:13; Acts 6:1; Tim. 3:2, 7). 6. MATURITY: No novice, Proven (1 Tim. 3:6, 10). 7. CHARACTER: Truthful, Love for justice, Fearless, Conscientious, Strong Courageous, Of good behaviour, Patient, Holding the faith in good conscience, Not stubborn, just (Exod. 18:21, Deut. 1:17; Joshua 1:7; 1 Tim. 3:2; Titus 1:7 – . 8. HUMAN RELATIONS: No respecter of persons, Merciful, Peaceful (Deut. 1:17; Matthew chapter 5 on Beatitudes). 9. TALENT: Able, Apt to teach, Able to exhort and convince (Exod. 18:21; 1 Tim. 3:2; Titus 1:7). 10. HOME: One wife, Hospitable, Ruler of his own house (1 Tim. 3:2 - 4). I want to say that as workers in the Lord’s farm, we can all tell stories of how the Lord has taken some very unlikely prospects and accomplished His purpose through them. We can cite some Bible Characters who succeeded as great leaders. In our day we know of some great leaders God is using. To narrow it home to our denomination, we have before us men and women who started as simple preachers, but whom God has used to lay solid foundations for this “Great Pentecostal Movement” and who, through the abundant grace of God, have risen to be admirable leaders. We of the younger generations should emulate the good steps of these leaders, surrender our talents to God for His use. “There is no limit to what God can do with men who are yielded to Him.” May God help us carry out our individual responsibilities faithfully and fill our positions honestly, whether lowly or great, to His glory, so that at the end of the race, or at the time of retirement, we will have no regrets. Saving Face; Ignoring Grace 1 Samuel 15:24-31 Read Then Saul admitted to Samuel, Yes, I have sinned. I have disobeyed your instructions and the LORDs command, for I was afraid of the people and did what they demanded. But now, please forgive my sin and come back with me so that I may worship the LORD. But Samuel replied, I will not go back with you! Since you have rejected the LORDs command, he has rejected you as king of Israel. As Samuel turned to go, Saul tried to hold him back and tore the hem of his robe. And Samuel said to him, The LORD has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today and has given it to someone else—one who is better than you. And he who is the Glory of Israel will not lie, nor will he change his mind, for he is not human that he should change his mind! Then Saul pleaded again, I know I have sinned. But please, at least honor me before the elders of my people and before Israel by coming back with me so that I may worship the LORD your God. So Samuel finally agreed and went back with him, and Saul worshiped the LORD. (1 Samuel 15:24-31) Reflect Saul became both rebellious and arrogant, so it is little wonder that God finally rejected him and took away his kingdom. Rebellion against God is perhaps the most serious sin of all because as long as a person rebels, he or she closes the door to forgiveness and restoration with God. Saul was more concerned about what others would think of him than he was about the status of his relationship with God (1 Samuel 15:24). He begged Samuel to go with him to worship as a public demonstration that Samuel still supported him. If Samuel had refused, the people probably would have lost all confidence in Saul. Sauls excuses had come to an end. It was the time of reckoning. God wasnt rejecting Saul as a person; the king could still seek forgiveness and restore his relationship with God, but it was too late to get his kingdom back. Respond All of us must one day give an account for our actions (Romans 14:12; Revelation 22:12). If we do not act responsibly with what God has entrusted to us, eventually we will run out of excuses. Ask God for light on choosing the right priorities. God bless you in Jesus Name Amen. Rev.
