Jerusalem : – Literally meaning “the City of Peace,” this ancient city pre- dates the conquest of the Holy Land by the Jews (Gen 14:18; Josh 10:1). However, the Scriptures consistently represent Jerusalem as a place of true devotion, sacrifice and worship. For example, Abraham’s offering of Isaac took place on Mt. Moriah in Jerusalem (Gen 22:2). Also, King David recognized that Jerusalem was the political and spiritual was the political and spiritual center of the Jews. For this reason he was determined to defeat the Jebusites and to build the City of David in Jerusalem (2 Sam 5:6- 10). And it was precisely here, in Jerusalem, that his son Solomon built the temple (1 Kgs 8:1; 2 Chr 3:1). Jesus affirms the unique place of Jerusalem by calling it,“the city of the Great King.” (Matt 5:35). The atoning sacrifice and resurrection of Christ took place in Jerusalem (Matt 26:1- 28:6). The outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost happened in Jerusalem (Acts 2:4 ff.). And finally, the holy city serves as the locus of God’s kingdom on earth at the end time (Rev 3:12, 21:2). The fact that “Jerusalem” is mentioned 144 times in the New Testament speaks of its importance.
