Jessica asked, My daughter is almost 8, and shes really smart. When she wants to be. When its something she doesnt want to do, she will suddenly pretend like she cant do it, even though it often drags the thing she doesnt want to do in the first place on for several hours. It used to be her reading. Shed pretend she could,t but I knew she could, because shed read things at random when we were in the car, then immediately clam up if I asked her where she saw that word. More recently it is with learning coins. If no one is around, I can hear her teaching them to her stuffed animals and puppets, but as soon as she has a homework assignment with them, she not only suddenly cant do it, she wont even repeat the right answer when I give it to her. We figured out her reading contrariness was most likely do to her father, since he would get mad at me for reading (because he wanted to watch a movie, his idea of family time), wouldnt read himself, and then when she was learning to read, he yelled at her for every wrong word. She and I have been in a new (safer) environment for almost a year now, and even though the reading issue went away, the problem has only transferred itself to other subjects. Im just at a complete loss over how to handle this situation. It would be so different if she really wasnt understanding the subject, but the fact that she can explain coins to her toys tells me there is something else going on.
