Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin (John 8:34). Dahmer PRACTICED sin, meaning that he was a SLAVE to sin. Slaves CANNOT say no to sin. When Dahmer killed his first victim, he COULD NOT just say, No, I wont kill her. Then just walk away, and never become a serial killer. Our sin nature makes us a slave to sin. Slaves do what their masters tell them to do, even though the slave does not want to do it. The slave desired to do other things, but the slave cannot do them. A slave to sin does not have the power to break the bonds of sins. When we sin, we are no longer a servant of God, but a servant of sin. The first step to breaking the bondage of sin is to realize that we are slaves to sin. Realizing you are a slave to sin enables you to acknowledge your sins and seek salvation.
