Jesus is Here for Us....... Today’s Gospel According to Luke Lk 4:38-44 After Jesus left the synagogue, he entered the house of Simon. Simon’s mother-in-law was afflicted with a severe fever, and they interceded with him about her. He stood over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up immediately and waited on them. At sunset, all who had people sick with various diseases brought them to him. He laid his hands on each of them and cured them. And demons also came out from many, shouting, “You are the Son of God.” But he rebuked them and did not allow them to speak because they knew that he was the Christ. At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a deserted place. The crowds went looking for him, and when they came to him, they tried to prevent him from leaving them. But he said to them, “To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent.” And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea. The Gospel of the Lord Luke gives us great insight into the continued miracles performed by Jesus and now opens up for the first time Jesus ‘proclamation of the Kingdom of God. Up until then, this was not mentioned and now Jesus was proclaiming the kingdom as in a present not a future tense. We also see the introduction of Simon who would later become Peter and one of Jesus’ disciples. When Jesus cast out the demons and they refer to him as the Son of God he rebukes them fore he does not want the crowd to place him in a category of having power from another but rather it is He, Jesus that is healing these people. This would later be a part of his trial when the crowds screamed out he had demonic powers. My favorite part in all of Luke in this reading is when Jesus leaves to pursue other roads and places and announce, “this purpose I have been sent.” He is telling us his role here was to help all of us, no matter where we were or what our lives were all about, Jesus purpose was to help all mankind. Today that purpose is still much alive and should be sought out in our hearts and souls. Jesus continues to work for us all the time, if we just ask him. By His own pronouncement he has come to us in past and present and again he will come in the future and continues to heal our wounds, be the scourge of the devil and the nourishment our soul needs. Open the door to your hearts, let him in.
