Jesus referred to His death as His baptism. Baptism means, immersion, submersion. In the Bible, when a person was baptized, they were immersed in water. The word baptism also means “of calamities and afflictions with which one is quite overwhelmed”. (Thayer’s Greek Lexicon) This use is found in Luke 12:50, Matthew 20:22, and Mark 10:38. But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished! -Luke 12:50 KJV Jesus’ death was overwhelming. He suffered and died in our place for our sins. When we become dead to sin and buried by baptism in water in the name of Jesus, we are claiming His death for us personally. Jesus’ primary purpose in coming in the form of the flesh of a human body was to die. His death would not be an easy one; it would be a death with great suffering. The beating that Jesus received was not from the Jews, which was 40 stripes (lashes) save one, 39 stripes. Rather, Jesus would receive stripes from the Romans, a scourging also referred to as “the half-way death” with an unlimited number of lashings. This beating was known to be with cords wrapped with sharp pieces of metal that would tear the flesh off from the back. There was tremendous blood loss in this scourging. No wonder Jesus was not able to carry His cross the full distance. It was not heard of that a victim of crucifixion would also undergo Roman scourging. And no wonder that Jesus died before they went to break the legs of those hanging on crosses. Yet, to fulfill the Law and the Prophets, it was by His stripes that we are healed, and it was by hanging on the tree, the cross, that He was cursed for us. And like the Passover lamb, Jesus, the Lamb of God which taketh away the sins of the world – not a bone of His was broken. Forty stripes he may give him, and not exceed: lest, if he should exceed, and beat him above these with many stripes, then thy brother should seem vile unto thee. - Deuteronomy 25:3 KJV Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: - Galatians 3:13 KJV His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance. - Deuteronomy 21:23 KJV But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. - Isaiah 53:5 KJV Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. - 1 Peter 2:24 KJV The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: ... that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. - John 19:31-33, 36 KJV “And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead. - Mark 15:44 KJV Jesus is the Passover Lamb Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: - 1 Corinthians 5:7 KJV The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. - John 1:29 KJV In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not carry forth ought of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone thereof. - Exodus 12:46 KJV (The Passover lamb) They shall leave none of it unto the morning, nor break any bone of it: according to all the ordinances of the passover they shall keep it. - Numbers 9:12 KJV He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken. - Psalms 34:20 KJV Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. - Romans 6:3-4 KJV Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. - Acts 2:38 KJV
