Jesus showed that it’s a sin for anyone to call another a fool. Mt 5:21-22 Yet, God noted via the scripture defined what is a fool. We are all fools in this world but the question for us to examine is for whom or for what are we a fool. Notice some persons the Bible says are fools. “The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God” (Ps 14:1 cf; 53:1). This man is a fool because he denies the very power of his own existence, and the source of every morally and spiritually decent thing known to man. He looks at himself, a living, rational, moral being, and assumes that he came from non-living, non-intelligent, amoral matter. He believes he created himself. (Ps 100:3) Is it any wonder that such go astray and altogether become filthy? (Ps 14:3) “Fools make a mock at sin . . . .” (Prov 14:9). This man is a fool because he unhesitatingly flies in the face of the authority of God before whose Christ he must one day stand in judgment. (Rom 2:16) So by doing defying sin he afflicts himself with misery, shame, and worst of all, eternal damnation (Mt 25:41-46). Of the man who spends his life laying up treasure for himself and who therefore forgets to be rich toward God, God says, “Thou fool . . . .” (Lk 12:13-21). He is a fool because he is ungrateful enough to forget that the source of his gain is the very God he ignores. Were it not for God’s bountiful hand none of us would have anything to enjoy (Jam 1: 17). This man forgets that “. . . the world passes away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abides for ever” (I Jn 2:17). He forgets riches are the consolation of the wicked. (Lk 6:24) He forgets the rich one day will weep and howl for the miseries for his ill-gotten gain. (Jam 5:1-6) He forgets God has chosen the poor of this world, rich in faith in inherit the kingdom of heaven. (Jam 2:5) The man who serves God is also “become a fool . . . .” (I Cor. 3:18). That is, this man is a fool in the eyes of the world because he submits to the preaching of the Cross (I Cor. 1: 18). However, in the sight of God he is an humble and profitable servant made worthy of eternal life by the blood of the Lamb. Christian’s become a fool when he has to answer a fool according to his own folly. (Prov 26:4,5) When a saint of God has to contend for the faith he does so not for his own profit, but that false doctrine be not taught as truth. (Jude 3) A saint of God is a fool to the world in that they spend their time reading, studying and teaching the Word of God. (1 Tim 4:13 f; 2 Tim 2:15; 2 Tim 4:2-5) A saint of God is often considered foolish for suffering persecution for the cause of Christ. (1 Pet 4:16) I ask then, what kind of a fool are you? Remember, however, that whether you like it or not, you are going to be thought a fool by someone; either by the world for serving God, or by God for serving the world. Actually, it is really a matter of making up your mind as to whose reward you desire, the world’s or God’s. We are either the servants of sin or the servants of righteousness. (Rom 6:17,18) No one can serve two masters. (Mt 6:24) So, choose you this day who you will serve: God or Man. (Josh 24:15) Whose fool are you? Alfred shannon Jnr
