Jesus spends time, a lot of time in the thirteenth chapter of Matthew throwing out navigational devices for how God acts. He tells stories, parables that he puts on a verbal kind of string, laying them out, to shape and reshape thinking, acting, and learning. Notice that spiritual practices are missing from his rhetoric. Jesus doesn’t say the kingdom of heaven is like a Bible Study. He doesn’t say the kingdom of heaven is like a pastor’s sermon. No, he takes everyday life, and in pithy language and rounded imagery allows the shimmer of God to light up very ordinary occasions, or very tiny pockets of earthiness, or the passion of a dreamer.
