Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem is one of the few events in Jesus life that is recorded in all four gospels. So lets take a look at it this week, leading up to Palm Sunday. They brought the colt to Jesus, threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it. Many spread their cloaks on the road and others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Both those who went ahead and those who followed kept shouting, Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest! Then Jesus entered Jerusalem and went to the temple. And after looking around at everything, he went out to Bethany with the twelve since it was already late. Mark 11:7-11 NET This was most like the first recording of the event. The Gospel of Mark is generally considered to be the first gospel written down, with Matthew and Luke generally following his outline. The disciples and the people in general, had no idea what was really going to happen to Jesus, although he had told the disciples twice before. Just imagine entering a city in triumph, knowing that at the end of that week you are going to die. A good number of the people, and maybe even some of the disciples, thought that this would be the beginning of Jesus reign on the earth and the casting off of the shackles of the Romans. Jesus will eventually come back to reign on the earth, but when He comes this time it will be as the conquering Savior, coming in triumph over all, and not the gentle Jesus, meek and mild that is often portrayed in gospels.
