Jesus’ words about the Holy Spirit in John 14–16 introduce the Spirit’s work of bringing glory to Jesus. However ‘glory’ has become such a ‘religious’ word—one used mostly in worship – that we sometimes forget the word is mainly about witness. One way of illustrating this is to think of disciples like the moon. The moon is quite dead by itself, but it shines gloriously in the darkness with the reflected light of the sun. The moon is eclipsed when the earth gets wholly or partly between the sun and the moon. In the same way, there is spiritual darkness in the Church when the world gets between the Son of God and believers. However, the sun is eclipsed when the moon gets between the sun and the earth. And there is a similar spiritual darkness on earth when disciples take the limelight and hinder the passage of light from the Son of God into the world, drawing attention to themselves instead of reflecting his glory.
