JetHawks split series in blow out win Fontana, Aplin and company enjoy big afternoons at LoanMart Field RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. – The JetHawks pounded out 18 hits en route to a 17-3 victory over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Sunday afternoon at LoanMart Field to finish with a series split. Nolan Fontana led the way offensively with four hits and three RBI while Andrew Aplin hit his third grand slam of the season. The Quakes started the game with a big leaguer on the mound and ended it with two infielders. Ted Lilly (0-4) picked up the loss in a Major League rehab start and once the game got out of hand after the seventh, the depleted Rancho Cucamonga bullpen turned to two infielders to finish the final two frames. After scoring two runs on Lilly in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead, Chris Epps led off the fourth with a solo home run, his 10th of the season, to extend the lead. Brandon Meredith followed by lining a ball off Lilly’s leg for a single. Lilly was removed from the game after that play. He allowed four runs on five hits over his three-plus innings of work. Meredith would end up scoring on a Fontana double and Lancaster never looked back. Aaron West (6-4) picked up the win for the JetHawks. He allowed two runs (one earned) over five innings and struck out a season-high eight batters without issuing a walk. Tommy Shirley followed by allowing one run over four innings to notch his first save of the season. Lancaster broke the game open in the sixth inning. Epps tripled and scored on a passed ball to start the frame. Meredith doubled, Ryan McCurdy was hit by a pitch, Delino Deshields bunted for a hit and Fontana drove in two runs with a double. DeShields later scored on an Aplin sac-fly to put the JetHawks up 8-2. Meredith added a two-run home in the seventh to make it a 10-2 game. In the eighth, the Quakes sent infielder Pedro Guerrero to the mound. The right-hander struggled, walking three batters and allowing three singles. Second baseman Scott Wingo came in to relieve him with two outs and gave up the grand slam to Aplin. Wingo tossed a scoreless inning in the ninth. McCurdy reached base five times in the game going 3-for-4 with two RBI, three singles and two hit-by-pitches. Meredith and Fontana each had four hit games. The JetHawks (9-2, 48-33) finished a seven game road trip with a 5-2 record and will head home to take on the Bakersfield Blaze on Monday night at 7:00 pm at The Hangar.
