Jihad in the Quran, according to a neutral academic source. In all cases it is translated as strive (*not* kill or war). The problem with jihad is one of interpretation. The translation is not in doubt, but the sense of the word depends on how Muslim scholars take the word in context. The Wahhabi school have a particular theological perspective that leads them to take the word one way, and teach an aggressive application. The majority of scholars find the Wahhabi school to contradict the plain sense of the Quran in other places. Its all very well for neutral scholars, i.e. non-Muslim scholars, to side with the moderate devotional majority of Muslim scholars, but Muslims are naturally sceptical about non-Muslim scholars, who have presuppositions of their own in some cases, or fail to be sensitive to matters of Muslim doctrine. The good news is that both careful scholarship and majority Muslim opinion agree that the Quran urges striving not violence.
