Jihadist group the Islamic State on Tuesday claimed it has executed 40-year-old American journalist James Foley as retaliation for U.S. airstrikes against its fighters in Iraq. The militant, Sunni Muslim group posted a video purportedly showing the revengeful act. Foley had been missing since November 22, 2012; when he was allegedly abducted by armed men and had never been seen or heard from since then, despite a public appeal. The family-run campaign: Find James Foley asked for time to seek answers to this tragedy. Foley was an experienced war correspondent who covered the Libyan conflict, before heading to Syria to cover the uprising against President Bashar al-Assads government on behalf of the Global Post, AFP and other media systems.
