Jim Foreman SNCC ancestor When Jim Foreman died, I was in the hospice room with him. As Movement people gathered to say their goodbye, our grief and memories united us into a common band. When we saw each other bending over Jim and weeping, we forgave each other. We forgave each other for our youthful transgressions. We forgave each other for not being strong enough and wise enough and steady enough; but the , our faith, raged as it might be, still pointed our hearts toward a beloved community that had consumed and engaged our youthful passion ,daring and highest selves. And as Dorrie Ladner, and Jim Foreman’s son, Chaka, and I gathered around him, I realized that people die from the feet up). As I felt the life moving out of Jim, death moved like a wave from his feet up throughout his body. We held his hands and played his favorite song, “Peace Be Still”. “Peace Be Still.” On the last line of this song, Jim Foreman uttered his last breath and flew away- this great Black bird was going home after a brilliant and weary journey through the thicket of White supremacy.
