Jo Montee McCoy told me to enter every church and castle that we come across in Germany...and that is exactly what we did next. We went into a gorgeous church just up the street from where we had lunch. Our trek to the church led us through streets that seemed untouched by time. In fact, one of the description of Tubengin mentions that it is one of the few cities that was not demolished by bombs during the war. Unlike other towns/cities around here, much of its original architecture is still in place. The church was beautiful and peaceful...that is until Rhyne found some stone steps that he wanted to explore. There wasnt a sign saying we couldnt, so we decided to follow. We ended up following him up a seemingly never ending narrow winding stone staircase, into a dark creaky attic, that led to wooden stairs, that led to winding metal stairs, that led us past gigantic bells, that led to straight metal stairs, that led to straight narrow wood stairs, that led us to the bell tower overlook. This gave us a beautiful view of the city. Before we headed back down the tower, I checked the time. It was nowhere near the top of the hour, so I figured we would be safe and not get caught standing by the bells when they went off. Little did I know, that at halfway through the hour the darn bells ring. Of course, we were standing on the staircase right next to them when it happened. The fact that all three of us managed to maintain our footing while jumping out of our skin was pretty amazing. Rhyne decided from that point on that this place is scary, get me out of here. He also decided that he wasnt able to walk due to fear. So back down the intense and various flights of stairs we went, stopping occasionally to rest. Rhynes ability to tuck the top part of his ear into his ear canal (because he was scared of the bells going off again) came in handy during those quick breaks we took on the very few landings provided.
